Registration » Qualifications assessment and verification

The assessment and verification of qualifications

Candidates for trainee biomedical scientist positions are advised to submit their qualifications for assessment/verification.

The Institute of Biomedical Science will provide suitable candidates with a letter detailing the outcome of the assessment/verification process.  The Institute will not award the Certificate of Competence at this stage; the route to registration is detailed here.

Practitioners of biomedical science, who have qualified and practised in a laboratory abroad, should apply directly to the Health Professions Council (HPC) for admission to the register via their ‘international route’.

The verification of IBMS accredited BSc (Hons)

Graduates with an Institute accredited BSc (Hons) i.e. as included in the list above, must apply to the Institute for a personal letter of degree verification.

This can be done by downloading Form A and submitting it along with a copy of the degree certificate and a copy of either a birth certificate or the personal details page of a passport.  If required, official notification of a change of name should also be included.

Individuals who have not yet graduated should include a letter from the university confirming their enrolment on an accredited BSc (Hons) undergraduate degree programme.

The assessment of a non-accredited degree programme

If the degree course is not an Institute accredited BSc (Hons), i.e. not included in the list here, graduates will need to submit their non-accredited degree programme for assessment.

This can be done by downloading Form B and submitting it along with a copy of the degree certificate, the entire course syllabus, degree transcript and the assessment fee.

Also required is a copy of a birth certificate or the personal details page of a passport.  If required, official notification of a change of name should be included.

Finally, if you are submitting an overseas qualification for assessment, a statement of comparability from UK NARIC must be included with your application, indicating the UK equivalence of all foreign qualifications.

Subsequent to the assessment, candidates may be required to undertake supplementary education from an IBMS accredited undergraduate degree to satisfy the educational requirements of the HPC Standards of Proficiency.

Re-evaluation and appeals

Evaluators request further information if this will help with their assessment. However, if information was omitted from the evaluation which may have made a difference to the evaluation outcome, this can be submitted for re-evaluation.

Subsequently, the Education and Professional Development Committee consider appeals of evaluation decisions. A written statement must be made by applicants clearly stipulating the basis on which they are appealing the evaluation.

The decision by the E&PD Committee will be final.
