The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) has developed a new Diploma in Biomedical Science to enable the recognition of post-registration training.

The Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) has developed a new Diploma in Biomedical Science to enable the recognition of post-registration training.

The qualification was launched in January 2015, in response to demand from employers who are facing new multi-disciplinary approaches in service provision in clinical laboratories, and therefore needed a new qualification to support training.

Deputy Head of Education Wendy Leversuch said: "This new diploma aims to provide biomedical scientists with opportunities in their careers by recognising their specialist knowledge and skills.

"The IBMS continues to develop our range of qualifications to support not just the careers of our members and biomedical scientists, but the evolving delivery of service to the patient."

The current release includes the following disciplines, with additional disciplines to follow:

  • haematology
  • clinical chemistry
  • transfusion science.

Successful completion of the portfolio will lead to the award of a discipline-specific Diploma in Biomedical Science. This qualification also allows members to upgrade their IBMS membership to the grade of Member, provided the individual holds the correct number of years’ professional experience.

The diploma and other career qualifications are available to IBMS members as part of their benefits of membership.
