Clinical Scientist Certificate of Attainment - Experiential Route

The IBMS Clinical Scientist Certificate of Attainment is an experiential programme offered for those who are working in the UK in healthcare science who have an MSc degree, or an equivalent-level qualification, and who can demonstrate through a combination of their education, training and professional experience that they meet the minimum level of practice required for registration as a clinical scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The award is offered in four specialist areas of practice:

  • Clinical Biochemistry
  • Clinical Immunology
  • Haematology
  •              Clinical Microbiology

This route is experiential and therefore based on prior learning and training that has been completed before the application is made. Candidates must be able to evidence M-level practice against the standards of proficiency for clinical scientists – i.e. must already be working at the level of a registered clinical scientist and able to meet ALL the clinical scientist standards of proficiency through their academic knowledge and professional experience.

Requirements

Candidates are expected to be in a role where they are making clinical decisions and providing scientific advice to clinicians and other healthcare professionals that affect patients’ diagnoses and treatment. They should ensure that they have already received the appropriate training and assessment for their current role to enable them to demonstrate, through the submission of a portfolio of evidence mapped to the HCPC standards of proficiency for clinical scientists and a viva voce examination, and that they have the relevant knowledge and practice in one of the above named specialties.

Please read our Guidance to Candidates before beginning your application. Having read the documentation, if you meet the criteria please download the application form to provide this along with you supporting documentation to equivalence@ibms.org .
