IBMS Student Affiliate Society hosts careers event
University of Reading’s Biological Sciences Society hosted a careers event in partnership with the Thames Valley Branch of the Royal Society of Biology.
IBMS Student Affiliate Society members Ryan Morris, Becky Westbrook, Jennifer Webster, Jenny Atkins and Peter Jackson planned the event with the help of the Royal Society of Biology.
The talks covered:
Conservation science
Jen Jones from the Galapagos Conservation Trust discussed the challenges of pursuing a career in conservation science, and how to stand out from the crowd.
Medical writing
Emma Handley from Porterhouse Medical discussed the benefits of writing scientific and medical documents. Porterhouse Medical has a reputation for recruiting graduates andstudents had the chance to find out how to apply for graduate positions there.
Biomedical research
Dr Mike Fry talked about his experiences in cancer research and mentioned his current research at the University of Reading’s Institute of Cardiovascular research, studying signalling events associated with platelet pathologies.
Defence and technology
Oliver Payne from Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) talked to students about the broad range of graduate programmes they offered.
Environmental quality and control
Nick Hill from Water Quality London discussed the issues and approaches taken to ensure the quality of our water is maintained.
Therapeutic research
Sarah Gill and Carmen Rodriguez from Premier Research, finished the event by talking to students about the range of therapeutic areas they explore. These include haematology and oncology; where they have been responsible for conducting 163 drug trials related to this field in the last 5 years.
Student organiser Ryan Morris commented:
“We were pleased with how the event ran. This was the first time as a Society we have hosted a careers event on campus and we are eager to act upon our successes and host another event of this kind soon.”
