New HCPC consultation announced

  New HCPC consultation announced
29 September 2016
The Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC) has launched a new consultation regarding proposed changes to the standards of education and training (SETs) and related guidance

The standards are necessary for HCPC approved pre-registration education and training programmes. These ensure that people who complete the programmes meet the proficiency standards required for their profession and are equally able to apply to register with the HCPC. They are also essential for any person who currently practices in or wishes to have a career within the fields of biomedical science.  The standards have been revised in conjunction with a professional liaison group which included IBMS representation through the Institute’s Executive Head of Education Alan Wainwright CSci FIBMS.

The proposed changes include:

• Broadening the terminology used in the SETs and guidance to make it more applicable to a variety of programme types.

• Making changes to strengthen the link between the SETs and the standards of conduct performance and ethics.

• The addition of a new requirement for programmes to include interprofessional education.

• The addition of two new standards requiring programmes to involve learners in the design, delivery and review of an approved programme; and to support learners to raise concerns.

• A number of other amendments to individual standards and to the guidance documents to improve clarity and consistency and to remove unnecessary duplication.

The consultation runs from 5th September to 25th November, with the final documents to be released in 2017.
