“Speak with a Scientist” Outreach Event

“Speak with a Scientist” Outreach Event
23 May 2024
A hands-on STEM event for Lower KS2 Students, organised by Leah Campbell and Hannah Scholes.

Event

Biomedical Scientist Hannah Scholes recently visited St. Gregory’s Catholic School in Margate, where she conducted a series of informative workshops for 85 Year 3 and 4 pupils.

Hannah began by introducing herself and describing the journey that led her to a career as a biomedical scientist. She also explained what her role entails.

Hannah then focused on the process of testing patients’ urine to determine its pH and contents using indicator paper and urinalysis sticks. The children got to work testing patient A, B and C and used their results to help diagnose each patient.

This event aimed to raise awareness of career opportunities in biomedical science for children and to strengthen community links.

Leah, a Year 4 student, said, "I liked being a scientist for a day; I felt important."
Ciaran, another Year 4 student, enjoyed the hands-on activity: "I liked getting to use the indicator paper and seeing it change colour after we dipped it into the urine."
Hannah Scholes concluded, "I thoroughly enjoyed participating in St. Gregory’s 'Speak with a Scientist' and 'Lunch with a Scientist' events. It was a chance to engage with a local school and highlight what we do as biomedical scientists. It's important to get children excited about science at a young age and inspire them to consider biomedical science or other STEM fields as potential careers.”

For those interested in outreach, the resources section of the IBMS website offers many great ideas for engagement activities.
