The IBMS Strategy: 2022 & Beyond

The IBMS Strategy: 2022 & Beyond
9 January 2023
Last week, we held our first #IBMSChat of the New Year, bringing together IBMS Chief Executive David Wells, The Biomedical Scientist Editor Rob Dabrowski, and Biomedical Scientist, Cherie Beckett.

This month, our Twitter Space #IBMSChat offered an exciting opportunity for members to directly discuss the plans and objectives of the IBMS with the Chief Executive himself. Answering well-put questions from Rob Dabrowski, David Wells started by discussing the past year and its impact on the profession, with 2022 being the first full year that the world began to emerge from the global COVID-19 pandemic.

As pandemic pressures have slowly begun to lessen, healthcare systems have started to focus on backlogs and re-prioritising patients placed on the back burner over the past few years. During the Space, we heard from David as he emphasised the vital role of diagnostics and pathology departments around the UK in working to tackle this very NHS backlog.

David commented on the role of the IBMS and the profession in making important strides towards supporting the UK healthcare crisis. At the same time Cherie Beckett provided the perspective of a biomedical scientist, expanding on what this new era could mean for pathology as we now face new threats to healthcare, such as monkeypox and the increasing spread of the ‘strep-A’ virus.

Notably, the Space enabled David to directly present the key ideas of the IBMS Strategy to all those listening. We have built our most recent strategies on three key member-focussed pillars; support, progress and promote. The Space provided a platform for the Chief Executive to explain in more detail how we are supporting our members and aspiring biomedical scientists, how we are progressing our members’ knowledge and experience, and the ways in which we continue to promote our highest qualifications and our profile in this post-pandemic era.

In addition to the topics brought forward by the Biomedical Scientist Editor, the Space drew a lot of attention from members, who commented with questions and thoughts about the year ahead for the profession. We heard from members concerned about changes in the specialist portfolio, people who wanted to learn more about what this year’s Congress will entail, and others who wanted to explore the potential of alternative placements to support HCPC registration.
